⛏ Where Are The Best Mining Jurisdictions?

Greetings Contrarian,

This is another Sunday edition, with your most pressing question.

Here we go:

Dear Safe-jurisdiction-seeker,

Here at TNBR, we believe there no safe jurisdictions, and if you’ve been reading our humble newsletter for any amount of time, you’ve seen this in real-time with issues such as:

  • The Pebble Gold /Copper mine, the largest undeveloped mining project in North America, in Alaska, that’s been halted for the better part of a decade.

  • First Nations In Canada claiming more rights than anticipated.

  • Chile nationalizing lithium projects.

Yes, there are places around the world where some projects, commodity-dependent, are more likely to get approved faster - take mining permitting in Africa for instance. In these cases, political stability is usually a concern.

In short, jurisdiction risk usually involves the following:

1- Payment of royalties - locals always want more, miners always want less

2- Environmental risk - NGOs may get involved and sway local decisions

3- NIMBY (not in my backyard) - most people don’t want a mine in close proximity to their home

4- Political risk - nationalization, security or permitting issues

This is further complicated by the fact there are regions that remain detached from the country’s overall reputation.

So here are some pointers we like to consider:

  • Keep a portfolio that’s diversified enough - not just country but continent-wise

  • Understand regions versus countries

  • Google about the target company/project in the country’s own google site AND language to know what locals think

  • Take the news with a grain of salt - this is mining afterall and we have more foes than friends

Going in all perceived risky jurisdictions when investors aren’t looking at these factors can be just as explosive as it’s dangerous to ignore them.

Tread carefully, gamble responsibly.
