Issues with contaminated water storage and waste management were raised.
Minto assured the government of control on May 5, but on May 12, the company abruptly ceased operations and abandoned the mine.
The government swiftly took over, stating there was no immediate environmental risk.
Minto still owes CAD 18 million for cleanup costs and CAD 2.5 million in royalties to the Selkirk First Nation.
The TSX Venture Exchange suspended trading of Minto shares on May 18.
