π Gold Is Up
Gold prices reached a two-week high as the US dollar and Treasury yields declined ahead of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech.
By noon EDT, spot gold was up 0.6% at $1,942.88 per ounce, nearing $1,950, and US gold futures rose 0.5% to $1,963.50. Markets anticipate steady rates following Powell's upcoming comments.
Concerns about rising energy costs have sparked debate over the Fed's potential aggressive stance. Elevated oil prices intensify inflationary pressures, suggesting the Fed might maintain higher rates longer. The Fed will announce its rate decision at 2 p.m. EDT.
Stable rates and a hawkish stance from Powell could support current gold prices. Central banks' consistent demand is also bolstering gold prices.
Finally.
π Mining Ban In New Mexico
The US government is considering a ban on mining and oil drilling in northern New Mexico for up to 50 years to protect Native American lands.
The proposal from the Department of the Interior aims to prohibit new mining claims and oil and gas development over 4,200 acres in the Placitas area. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland emphasized the importance of protecting public lands, highlighting feedback from Tribes, leaders, and community members.
This announcement initiates a 90-day public comment period.
Just as the world is pushing for more mining, the US is going the other way.
Great.
