😉 Tariffs Rattle Markets

Copper prices surged by over 5% in New York as U.S. President Trump indicated a potential 25% tariff on imports, sparking a frantic rally in Comex copper trading.

His remarks, made during a congressional address, fuelled speculation that tariffs could be imposed sooner and at a higher rate than previously anticipated. This comes after a Commerce Department investigation into whether tariffs on copper are necessary for national security reasons.

The price surge has widened the gap between Comex and London Metal Exchange (LME) copper, with Comex now trading at nearly a 12% premium. This discrepancy has ignited a global rush to secure copper shipments before enforcing tariffs.

LME copper also rose by 2.5%, while zinc and aluminium gained 2.5% and 1.7%, respectively, as industrial metals and mining stocks rallied amid broader economic and geopolitical shifts.

👏 Critical Minerals and More

NioCorp Developments Ltd. NASDAQ: NB ( ▼ 3.57% ) highlights President Trump’s announcement of “historic action” to expand U.S. critical minerals and rare earths production.

The move is expected to accelerate projects like NioCorp’s fully permitted Elk Creek Critical Minerals Project in Nebraska, which aims to produce niobium, scandium, titanium, and rare earth elements.

Key proposals to support U.S. mining include low-interest loans for permitted projects, streamlined permitting, and expanded Department of Defense funding.

NioCorp executives advocate for policies to reduce U.S. reliance on China and BRICS nations, positioning the U.S. as a leader in critical minerals production.
