🤔 Rare Rejection
Ukraine has rejected a US proposal to acquire 50% of its rare earth minerals, with President Zelenskiy seeking better terms and security guarantees, the Financial Times reports. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent presented the offer in a draft contract during their meeting Wednesday, but Zelenskiy did not sign, opting to review it further.
Kyiv wants any mineral deal tied to US and European security commitments, as Washington has pushed for access to Ukraine’s critical minerals in exchange for military and economic aid.
While USGS data shows Ukraine has no major rare-earth reserves, some deposits exist, primarily in Russian-occupied areas. Alright, back to trying to get Canada’s then.
🧐 Tariff Fears
Gold climbed back above $2,900 per ounce, supported by a softer dollar and renewed trade war concerns as President Trump threatened new tariffs, including on autos.
Spot gold gained 0.6% to $2,900.44, while U.S. gold futures rose 0.4% to $2,912.10. Analysts expect further upside, with UBS forecasting a rise to $3,000. Meanwhile, progress in Russia-Ukraine peace talks could weigh on gold’s gains.
Other metals also saw gains, with silver up 1% to $32.50, platinum rising 0.4% to $983.20, and palladium climbing 2% to $980.50. Markets await comments from Federal Reserve officials for interest rate signals.
Come quick, our most esteemed market overlords.
