Mining corporation Rio Tinto will acquire a 15% stake in Australian critical minerals developer Sovereign Metals for $27.6 million, marking its first venture into the graphite sector.
The deal comprises Rio Tinto purchasing 83.09 million shares in Sovereign at a 10% premium, along with an option for a further 34.54 million shares, potentially increasing its stake to 19.99%.
The investment will fund a feasibility study for Sovereign’s Kasiya project in Malawi, aimed at producing graphite for lithium-ion batteries and rutile for the pigment and titanium metal industries.
