🙄 Coal Consumption Dilemma

China's top industry association suggests that while the country is nearing peak coal consumption, its pivotal role in ensuring energy security means a rapid decline in usage is unlikely.

The surge in wind and solar energy installations, coupled with a cooling demand from heavy industry due to the real estate crisis, is displacing coal in the power sector. However, coal remains necessary to balance intermittent renewable energy generation.

Despite a recent increase in coal consumption, projections indicate a forthcoming decline, with the expectation of plateauing over the next few years. President Xi Jinping has pledged a reduction in coal usage starting from 2026. Nevertheless, differing opinions persist, with some experts predicting a modest increase in coal consumption in the near future.

The fact that China continues to depend on coal for energy security, even as it approaches peak consumption, is worrisome given the growing emphasis on renewables and the uncertain outlook for the future. We’ll keep an eye on this.
