Kazatomprom, the world's largest uranium miner, announced it will produce only 80% of its permitted uranium output in 2024, instead of the previously planned 90%. This reduction is due to difficulties in procuring sufficient sulfuric acid, a key component in their mining process.
The company produced 80% of the allowed levels annually since 2018 but had aimed to return to 90% in 2024 and 100% in 2025. Increased domestic demand for sulfuric acid and supply chain disruptions have caused shortages. This situation could impact production plans for 2025, with any adjustments to be announced in the first half of 2024.
Kazatomprom, accounting for roughly 30-40% of global production, is trading higher (10% as we type this). Sometimes it pays to be the rainmaker in the market โ as the market heats up, all you have to do is not increase production and get paid a lot more for the same output. Equities and spot prices have both jumped on the news.
